I talked in an earlier blog about my sedentary lifestyle and how this has prompted me to instigate a fundamental shift in behaviour. If I don’t do something soon I will be firmly cementing myself into the cohort of middle aged men with growing beer guts and rushing headlong into Type 2 diabetes, a heart attack, or both.
No more excuses
My excuses have historically been endless, usually related to not having any time, or being unwell, or being injured, or not being near a gym, or having forgotten my gym kit, or just too busy, blah blah blah.
Currently my wardrobe is laden with more trousers and shirts that I cannot get into than those that fit. Periodically I forget and grab an old favourite to learn that, yes, I still can’t get into them. This usually results in a dip to my self-esteem, improved only by a short term ingestion of something with a high calorific/sugar content.
Don’t put off your goals
My unhealthiness is caused by ‘life getting in the way’. This can be an excuse for putting off many goals, including your career, as the one thing we are all short of is time. I met someone the other day who, after a series of stressful jobs and obesity, had finally got the motivation to have a significant change in lifestyle, and work-life balance. Part of this was to re-engage with their former passion of running and change their job. Life is too short to work with people you don’t like, or maybe in a company you feel you don’t fit into.
Deciding to take the next step in your career, or change job, is similar to coming to the realisation that your health will suffer if you don’t change your lifestyle. You will only suffer mentally and physically if you put it off.
A little at a time
The best way to find the time to make the change is to break it down into small goals. Like finding time to get some exercise, you need to set aside some time for your career. Just 30 minutes a few times a week to think about what you want to do next, dust off your CV and update it, make some new connections on Linked In and maybe even contact a recruitment company who specialise in your work sector. Here at Red Tiger Talent we specialise in Location Planning, Property Research and Consumer Insight roles; and can help with advice and finding the role that might be the boost your career needs.
Choose the new you
My closing thought is – don’t put off your goals just because life gets in the way. Whether you want a healthier lifestyle, a change in your career or just to take time to fit in something you have always wanted to do – don’t let life get in the way of living. Set aside that time when you may have been on Facebook or Instagram, or searching through your wardrobe for something that fits, to get on with taking steps towards the new you.
